Change & Newness II: Life at 1038 mph

Dr. Will Jones

First Presbyterian Church, Brownsville, TN

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Last week we talked about a change in our approach to the sermon/preaching/teaching time on Sundays. We noted how we will be looking at themes and chunks of ideas for about a month or two at a time. For 2008 we will have 10-12 major themes, that we will look at together. We will look closely at these issues, and we will look closely at Scripture to see how God is at work in our lives as we face these issues. It would take too long to go back and mention some of the reasons behind this change, but DVD’s are available for the mere price of just asking. To do so, we need to talk first about change in general. If you were here last week, you will remember that we noted how frequently change happens. It happens all the time, to us as individuals, it happens to families, change happens to groups of people, even churches and whole communities change over time. Change is a constant reality.

People have noticed how changed affects us for a long time. The great Greek philosopher Heraclitus who lived in Ephesus around the year 500 BC, remarked that “the only thing that endures is change.” A very different person who some of you flower children & baby boomers might consider a modern-day philosopher, Bob Dylan, sang in 1964: “The times they are a-changin’!”
